For an eCommerce business owner, keeping a track of the traffic and analysis of the whole store is very critical. The data allows you great insights like which products and what types of advertisements are attracting viewers and hence add a lot towards strategic sales increase. Google Analytics (GA) is a top analytics platform used across the globe, and Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is the latest iteration.

GA4 To Replace Universal Analytics (UA)

Many Shopify sellers have experience working with Google Analytics and are familiar with the iteration ‘Universal Analytics (UA)’. What’s new in GA4?

UA tracks screen views in separate mobile-specific properties, whereas GA4 combines both web and app data in the same property. As Google Developers introduced, “Google Analytics 4 is an analytics service that enables you to measure traffic and engagement across your websites and apps.” Here are a few top features of Google Analytics 4:

  • You can get a detailed analysis of your customers throughout every platform through its cross-device reporting capabilities.
  • You can get AI-based assumptions on future targets and sales.
  • GA4 provides more detailed and customer-centric conversion insights.
  • You can also create, track, and receive reports on different types of events through GA4.

Google Analytics 4 Interface

In favor of GA4, Google is sunsetting Universal Analytics in July 2023.

How Can Shopify Users Switch To GA4

As of now, Shopify users cannot use GA4 for their Shopify stores. That is because currently Shopify only supports Universal Analytics for its database.

As a Shopify user, you can continue to use Universal Analytics and by March 2023 Shopify and Google teams will share the guidelines for the integration. Universal Analytics will continue to collect data until its sunset in July 2023, and data will remain accessible for at least 6 months afterward. So, as a Shopify seller, there’s no action needed from your end right now.
